Most pillow shopping goes wrong in the same place. People buy for firmness, when
the thing that actually decides whether a pillow works for you is height — and
the right height is different depending on whether you sleep on your side or
your back. Too high and your head is pushed up out of line; too low and it drops
away. Buy the wrong height and no amount of plumping fixes it.

That is the problem this one is built around. It arrives with two foam inserts
sitting inside the pillow and a set of loose foam noodles in channels underneath
them, and you take them out until it suits you. Remove an insert and the whole
pillow drops in height. Pull noodles out of a channel and that part of it gets
softer. Put them back and it firms up again. Keep whatever you take out — memory
foam softens with use over a year or two, and you may want a noodle or two back.

The surface is contoured rather than flat, with one long edge higher than the
other. The higher edge fills the wider gap between your head and the mattress
when you are on your side; the lower edge suits lying on your back. You turn the
pillow around rather than buying two. The under-edges are scalloped, which is
there so your shoulder can tuck in underneath rather than propping the pillow
up.

The foam is Australian-made visco-elastic memory foam, which softens as it warms
to you, so it feels firmer for the first minute than it does ten minutes later.
This is the Original, the softer of the range. If you are broadly built or
usually find soft pillows collapse under you, the Plus is the same pillow in a
firmer foam and is likely the better starting point — ask us.

What you get

  • Two removable foam inserts that change the height and shape
  • Loose foam noodles in channels underneath, to adjust firmness
  • Contoured, with one long edge higher than the other
  • Scalloped under-edges so your shoulder tucks beneath the pillow
  • Australian-made visco-elastic memory foam, softer Original density
  • Open-weave mesh cover included, washable, goes under your own pillowcase
  • 52.5 x 38 cm, 12 cm on the low edge and 14 cm on the high edge
  • Included on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods, ARTG 174455

Sizing and fit

  • One size. The height is what you adjust, not the size you pick.
  • Mostly a side sleeper: start with both inserts in and use the higher edge.
  • Mostly a back sleeper: start with the lower edge, and try taking one insert out.
  • Small frame, or the pillow feels like it is pushing your head up: take an insert out.
  • Broad shoulders, or your head sinks too far: leave both inserts in and consider the firmer Plus instead.
  • Give any change about three nights before deciding. A new pillow feels wrong for the first two.

When this is the wrong answer

A pillow is bedding, not treatment. If you are waking with a stiff or painful
neck most mornings, the pillow is worth sorting out, but it is rarely the whole
story on its own — and swapping pillows for a year while the real cause goes
unlooked-at is a common and expensive way to make no progress.

Some things point away from bedding altogether. Pain that wakes you rather than
greets you in the morning, numbness or pins and needles in an arm or hand,
headaches that are getting worse or more frequent, or neck pain after a fall or
a car accident all deserve to be looked at properly before you spend anything.
So does snoring heavy enough that someone has noticed you stop breathing, which
is a conversation for your GP, not a pillow purchase.

Ring us before you order if you are unsure. We would rather talk you out of a
$130 pillow than sell you one that was never going to be the answer.

Not sure it is the right one?

Bring it up at an appointment, or ring the clinic before you order. Ten minutes with someone who can look at how you actually move will tell you more than any product page — including ours — and it costs you nothing to ask.
