Feet and ankles carry everything above them, so problems here quickly change how you walk and can flow up into the knee, hip and back. Most respond well once the load is managed properly.

Signs and symptoms

  • Sharp heel pain with the first steps in the morning
  • Pain and stiffness in the Achilles that eases as you warm up
  • Repeated rolling of the ankle
  • Swelling around the ankle after activity
  • Burning or aching through the ball of the foot

How we treat it

  • Calf and foot intrinsic strengthening
  • Balance and proprioception retraining
  • Shockwave therapy for persistent heel or Achilles pain
  • Taping, footwear and orthotic advice
  • Graded loading back into walking, running or sport

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Symptoms overlap between conditions, so the right treatment depends on an assessment. If your pain followed a significant injury, is getting worse, or comes with numbness, weakness or unexplained weight loss, please see your GP.
