Jaw pain and TMJ dysfunction are commonly missed, and often sit alongside neck pain, headaches and teeth grinding. Physiotherapy can make a real difference here, usually within a handful of sessions.

Signs and symptoms

  • Clicking, popping or grating when opening the mouth
  • Difficulty opening wide, or the jaw catching
  • Aching around the jaw, ear or temple
  • Pain chewing tougher foods
  • Waking with a tight, tired jaw

How we treat it

  • Hands-on jaw joint and muscle treatment
  • Dry needling for the chewing muscles
  • Jaw control and relaxation exercises
  • Treatment of the neck where it contributes
  • Habit, posture and stress-related advice

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Symptoms overlap between conditions, so the right treatment depends on an assessment. If your pain followed a significant injury, is getting worse, or comes with numbness, weakness or unexplained weight loss, please see your GP.
