Hip pain is often felt in the groin, the side of the hip or referred into the thigh, and it is easily confused with back pain. A clear assessment sorts out where it is actually coming from, which changes the treatment entirely.

What we treat

  • Gluteal tendinopathy and hip bursitis
  • Hip osteoarthritis
  • Groin strains and adductor injuries
  • Hip impingement (FAI) and labral irritation
  • Pre and post hip replacement rehabilitation
  • Hip-related lower back pain

Signs and symptoms

  • Pain on the outside of the hip, worse lying on that side
  • Groin pain with walking, squatting or getting out of the car
  • Stiffness putting on shoes and socks
  • A limp or reduced walking distance
  • Clicking, catching or a feeling of giving way

How we treat it

  • Glute and hip strengthening, progressively loaded
  • Manual therapy and joint mobilisation
  • Walking and gait retraining
  • Load management for irritable tendons
  • Hydrotherapy where weight-bearing is painful

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Symptoms overlap between conditions, so the right treatment depends on an assessment. If your pain followed a significant injury, is getting worse, or comes with numbness, weakness or unexplained weight loss, please see your GP.
