Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to swim?
No. Hydrotherapy takes place in the shallow end with a physio supervising.
Which conditions benefit?
Arthritis, joint pain, injury rehab, post-surgery, chronic pain, mobility issues.
Do I need a referral?
Not usually, unless required by your insurer or for complex medical needs.
What should I bring?
Swimwear, towel, water bottle, and any medical paperwork.
How long is a session?
Usually 30–45 minutes, including assessment and guided pool exercises.
Is hydrotherapy for all ages?
Yes, all fitness and mobility levels are welcome.
Difference from aqua aerobics?
Hydrotherapy is tailored, physio-led rehab. Aqua aerobics is general exercise.
Where are your hydrotherapy pools in Adelaide?
Our clinic is at Seaton in Adelaide’s western suburbs, and hydrotherapy runs in a heated offsite pool nearby. Your physiotherapist will confirm which pool your sessions are booked into and what the access is like — steps, a ramp or a hoist — before your first appointment, so there are no surprises on the day.
How warm is the water?
A hydrotherapy pool is considerably warmer than a lap pool, typically in the low thirties. That warmth is part of the treatment rather than a comfort: it relaxes guarded muscle and makes movement possible for people who cannot yet tolerate the same work on land. It is also why a session is shorter than a gym session — warm water is more tiring than people expect.
Can I use my NDIS funding for hydrotherapy?
Yes, where hydrotherapy is a reasonable and necessary support in your plan. It is commonly funded under improved daily living, and it suits participants whose pain or weight-bearing limits make land-based exercise difficult. We can work with self-managed and plan-managed participants, and we will be straight with you about whether the pool is the right use of your funding or whether land-based work would do more.
Is hydrotherapy covered by private health insurance?
Most extras policies that cover physiotherapy also cover physiotherapist-led hydrotherapy, and we can claim on the spot through HICAPS. What you get back depends on your level of cover and your remaining annual limit, which only your fund can tell you. Pool entry is sometimes charged separately by the facility, so ask us about that when you book.
Do you offer hydrotherapy in southern Adelaide?
Not directly — we are based at Seaton, and our pool sessions run in the western suburbs. If you are in the south, a clinic closer to you will be more practical for a programme that needs two visits a week. We would rather say that than have you drive across the city. If you are in the west or north-west, we are well placed.
How many sessions will I need?
Most programmes run six to eight sessions, by which point the aim is that you can continue independently or move onto land-based work. Hydrotherapy is generally a bridge rather than a destination — water removes load, which is useful while you cannot tolerate it, but strength is ultimately built by loading tissue. A programme that never progresses out of the pool is usually not finishing the job.
