Physiotherapy for Tradies and Manual Workers in Adelaide

If you work with your body for a living, an injury is not just pain. It is income. A back that goes on a Monday is a week off the tools; a shoulder that will not go overhead is a job you cannot do. Physiotherapy for tradies and manual workers is about one thing: getting you back to work safely, and quickly, and in a way that holds.

Tradies & Manual Workers at UpPlus Physiotherapy

Physio for tradies, factory and warehouse workers in Adelaide: back, shoulder, knee and elbow injuries from the job, at UpPlus, Seaton. ReturnToWorkSA accepted.

We are in Seaton, close to the Port Road industrial corridor, Royal Park and Woodville, and a lot of the people we see are builders, electricians, plumbers, warehouse and factory workers, and drivers. Early starts and evening appointments mean you do not lose a day to be seen.

The injuries the trades produce

  • Lower back from lifting, twisting and bending, often a strain that would settle with the right advice and goes bad with the wrong rest.
  • Shoulder from overhead work: rotator cuff irritation, impingement, and the slower-building tendon problems of plasterers, painters and electricians.
  • Knee from kneeling and squatting: tilers, floorers, carpet layers, mechanics.
  • Elbow and wrist from gripping and vibrating tools: tennis elbow in people who have never held a racquet.
  • Neck from looking up at ceilings, or down into engine bays, for hours.
  • Falls and sudden injuries: ankle sprains off ladders and scaffolds, and the rehab after a fracture has healed.

How we treat a working body

The assessment looks at what the job actually asks of you, with the actual weights, reaches and hours, not a generic "avoid heavy lifting". Treatment settles the pain and restores the movement, and the rehab is built around the tasks you need back: the lift, the overhead reach, the kneel. We are specific about what you can do now and what you cannot, so you and your employer can plan the week rather than guess.

For most muscle and joint injuries the evidence says a graded return to modified duties beats staying off until you are fully better, and the longer someone is away from work the harder returning gets. We write capacities your boss can roster around.

If it happened at work

A work injury in South Australia is covered by ReturnToWorkSA. Once the claim is accepted, bring your claim number, your employer's details and your referral. We prepare the physiotherapy management plan the scheme requires, with specific, measurable goals, and report progress against them. The work injury page explains the process. If there is no claim, or the injury built up over years rather than happening on a day, treatment is a standard private appointment, claimable on health fund extras, and your GP can refer you under a care plan for anything persistent, which we bulk bill with no gap.

Signs it is time to come in

  • A back or shoulder that "goes" more than once a year.
  • Pain that is there at the start of the shift, not just the end.
  • You have changed how you lift or reach to work around it.
  • Numbness, pins and needles or weakness in a limb.
  • An injury from a fall or a lift that is not improving after a week.

Tradies tend to wait. The ones who come in early are back on the tools fastest.

Keeping it from happening again

Most trade injuries are not one bad lift. They are a body that was not strong enough for the job, doing the job anyway. The last part of rehab is strength work aimed at exactly that, in the clinic or in a gym-based program, and it is the part people skip. Finish it and the back that went this year is far less likely to go next year.

Common questions

Can I keep working with a back injury?

Often yes, on modified duties. For most lower back strains the evidence favours staying active and returning to lighter work early over complete rest. We assess what you can safely do, in actual weights and hours, and write it down so your employer can plan around it.

Is my shoulder pain from working overhead?

Very likely, if your work keeps your arms above shoulder height. Overhead work irritates the rotator cuff tendons and, over time, can wear them. Early treatment and a strengthening program usually settle it; left for a year it becomes a much longer job.

Does WorkCover (ReturnToWorkSA) pay for physio?

Yes, once the claim is accepted and the treatment is part of an approved plan. We prepare the management plan the scheme requires and report progress. Bring your claim number, employer details and referral to the first visit.

Do you have early or late appointments for shift workers?

Yes. The Seaton clinic opens from 8am and runs evening appointments to 7pm, with weekends by arrangement. Ring the clinic if you need something outside those hours and we will see what we can do.

Why do I have tennis elbow when I don't play tennis?

Because the tendon on the outside of the elbow is loaded by gripping and twisting, which tools do far more than racquets. It is common in electricians, plumbers, mechanics and anyone using vibrating tools. It responds to a specific loading program and, where it has become stubborn, shockwave therapy.
